- The Messiah's parents went every year to Jerusalem at the feast of the Passover.
- Does scripture indicate Jesus kept the Passover other years, besides when he was slain?
- When did Jesus eat the Passover when he gave the new symbols?
- Matthew 26:1-30
- Did Jesus indicate he would be crucified on Passover?
- 2You know that after two days the Passover is coming,
and the Son of Man will be delivered up to be crucified.
- When did the chief priests, the scribes, and the elders plan to kill Jesus?
- 3Then the chief priests, the scribes, and the elders of the people were gathered together in the court of the high priest, who was called Caiaphas.
4They took counsel together that they might take Jesus by deceit, and kill him.
5But they said, "Not during the feast, lest a riot occur among the people."
- What Feast were they referring to? The Days of Unleavened Bread.
- Did Jesus tell the diciples to prepare Passover, because he would eat the Passover with them?
- 17Now on the first day of unleavened bread, the disciples came to Jesus, saying to him,
"Where do you want us to prepare for you to eat the Passover?"
18He said, "Go into the city to a certain person, and tell him, 'The Teacher says, "My time is at hand. I will keep the Passover at your house with my disciples."'"
19The disciples did as Jesus commanded them, and they prepared the Passover.
- What time of day did Jesus give the Passover symbols?
- 20Now when evening had come, he was reclining at the table with the twelve disciples.
- The scriptures clearly show that Jesus took the bread and wine with his diciples on the evening of what was called the Passover.
- Does the Gospel of Mark agree with the Gospel of Matthew?
- Mark 14:1-26
- Once again the scriptures clearly show that Jesus took the bread and wine with his diciples on the evening of what was called the Passover.
- Does the Gospel of Luke agree with the Gospels of Matthew and Mark?
- Luke 22:1-39
- And a third time the scriptures clearly show that Jesus took the bread and wine with his diciples on the evening of what was called the Passover.
- Does the Gospel of John have a different perspective of Passover than the other Gospels?
- John 11:55-57
- John 12:1-8
- Interesting that the Gospel of John is the only gospel that mentions the footwashing.
- John 13:1-38
- Also of interest is that the Gospel of John does not even mention the unleavened bread and wine ceremony.
Why would that be?
- God had the apostle John write his gospel last. When he wrote his gospel, Matthew, Mark
and Luke were already written. John's gospel was filling in the things that they had not mentioned.
Remember the Apostle John was an eye witness to what occured on the Passover evening that the Messiah gave
the symbols.
- I believe that footwashing was already a part of the Christian Passover, but until the Gospel of John it was not in the
scriptures. The Apostle John wanted to show how this got to be a part of the Passover service.
- 1 Timothy 5:9-10
- If you asked someone in the Traditional Churches today what it meant to wash the feet of the disciples,
would they know what you are talking about? Probably not. If you ask someone in the Churches of God that
keeps the Holy Days, would they know what you are talking about? Probably so. Why would one group tend to
not know and the other group tend to understand? Because those practicing this at Passover have a greater
understanding of it. We learn by doing, not just hearing. We don't just read about Jesus washing the
feet of the disciples, we do it and grow from it.
- Refusing to do the footwashing, clearly shows God that you don't have the attitude of washing
the feet of the disciples. What a blessing for us that the Traditional Churches refuse to accept.
- Were the Jews keeping Passover at a different time then when the Messiah kept it?
- John 18:28-32
- Were the Jews keeiping Passover a day later than the Messiah?
Who would you trust more to have Passover correct? The Messiah or the Jews?
If they were keeping the Passover on the 15th, is what they were doing really scriptual?
- Leviticus 7:19-21
- Leviticus 22:1-7
- They could have bathed and eaten the Passover after sundown according to scripture,
but they could not eat it before sundown, even if they bathed.
Why were they concerned with eating sacrifices before sundown?
- People seem to forget that Priests eat sacrifices daily and any lamb sacrificed
on Passover day would be a Passover sacrifice that they were eating, for the
entire 24 hour period.
- John 18:38-40
- Notice Pilate said he released a prisoner at Passover. When did he set Barabbas free?
- Matthew 27:24-26
- Pilate released Barabbas at Passover on the same day the Messiah was crucified.
- John 19:11-16
- For some, these scriptures in John 18 and 19 make it appear as if the Jews were
sacrificing the lambs on the 14th and eating them on the 15th.
Even if they were doing so, it doesn't mean they were doing so correctly.
- Jesus Christ and the disciples ate the Christian Passover he instituted
in the evening of what is called Passover day,
which is clearly shown in the Old Testament to be the 14th day of the first month.
- When the Jews eat their Passover should not affect when a Christian
should take the Passover that the Messiah instituted.
- Peter seized during the days of Unleavened Bread by Herod.
- Acts 12:1-4
- If he seized him during the days of Unleavened Bread, how could he release him after Passover?
- Sometimes in scripture the word Passover is referring to Passover and Days of Unleavened Bread.
- To put it in the vernacular, "Herod seized Peter during the Days of Unleavened Bread and intended
to bring him out after the Passover Festival was completed.
- When did the Apostle Paul keep Passover?
Do we have any scriptures to give us any indication?
- Romans 3:1-31
- Notice in verse 25 that Christ's blood passes over PRIOR sins.
- Grace is not license to sin in the future, it is forgiveness for sins of the past.
- For the present and the future we as Christians are expected to repent and start
obeying God's law, so we can learn to love as God loves.
- 1 Corinthians 5:1-13
- Paul admonishes us to keep the Feast, not to ignore it as Traditional Churches do today.
- 1 Corinthians 11:17-34
- Notice the Apostle Paul notes WHEN this took place.
It was the night of his betrayal, it was on the 14th day of the first month.
- "For I received from the Lord that which also I delivered to you,
that the Lord Jesus on the night in which he was betrayed took bread."
- The last reference to Passover refers to Moses keeping of it in Exodus 12.
- Hebrews 11:24-28
- Notice that the sprinkling of the blood is mentioned, not the eating of the Passover.
This sprinkling of the blood was accomplished on the 14th, no matter when you believe
the Passover lamb was eaten.
- The day of the month that Passover is kept is never mentioned in the New Testament.
- We just reviewed all the scriptures where Passover is mentioned in the New Testament
and there is not a single scripture that gives the day of the month.
- To get the day of the month that Passover occured you must go to the old Testament.
- The Old Testament always states Passover as being on the 14th day of the first month.
There are 13 instances which we covered in the previous message on Passover.
- Jewish history always shows the Passover lamb was slain on the 14th,
but it is debatable whether they always ate it on the 14th or 15th.
- "When did Jesus and the Apostles and the early Churches of God take the Passover?"
- Next time we go back into history and study this question.
- Don't miss Passover Part 4 entitle, "Passover, the Quartodeciman Controversy!"
